Juba League, BCL vandalise Kazipur municipality office

14 June,2013

Sirajganj (RTNN): Local activists of the ruling Awami League’s  associate bodies, Juba League and Bangladesh Chhatra League, allegedly carried out an attack on Kazipur municipality office on Wednesday.

They vandalised various furniture of three rooms of the office.

Witnesses said some activists of the pro-Awami League organisations for youths and students stormed into the municipality office around 11.00 am and entered the mayor’s room by breaking open the door.

The attackers damaged chairs, tables, fax machine and computer in the mayor’s room and left the place after vandalising two more rooms, including one of councillors.

Blaming the local Juba League and Chhatra League activists for the attack, Mayor Abdus Salam said the ruling party activists carried out widespread vandalism soon after he left the office.

He claimed that the attackers damaged valuables worth Tk5 lakh.

Asked about the possible reason behind the incident, Abdus Salam said the attack was launched over his participation in a meeting in Rajshahi on Tuesday.

Local Juba League leaders, however, denied the allegation.

A councillor of the municipality, asking not to be named, said the attack was carried out as Abdus Salam made some derogatory comments about Awami League central leader Mohammad Nasim during election campaign of the BNP supported candidate in Rajshahi City Corporation election.

Officer-in-charge of Kazipur Police Station Matiur Rahman said they were yet to ascertain identity of the attackers.
