‘Who’s governing the country?’

15 June,2016

RTNN News Desk: Stating that target killings are being carried out in a planned way, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday questioned whether the country is run by the Awami League-led government or any other force.

‘The country’s independence and sovereignty has now become meaningless. It’s also difficult to say whether now we’ve independence and sovereignty,’ she told an iftar party.

The BNP chief further said, ‘Even though they’re in power illegally, we can question whether they (govt) are governing the country or any other force is working from behind the scene.’

Khaleda was addressing the iftar party organised by the BNP-led 20-party’s component Jatiya Party (Zafar) at the city’s Ladies’ Club, reports UNB.

The BNP chief said the people of no religion are now safe as all are falling prey to the target killings. ‘It never happened in the past in the country the way people of all religions are being killed now.

The target killings are being carried out in a planned way and ruling party men are behind those.’

Khaleda said though the Prime Minister has information about who are carrying out the secret killings, she is not arresting them. ‘The innocent people are being taken to jail by sending the perpetrators abroad.’

She alleged that the current government cannot ensure the security of people as there is no democracy in the country. ‘Now the government wants to run the country by holding the country’s people hostage.’

The BNP chief also alleged that police are arresting ‘innocent’ people and leaders and activists of BNP and other parties only to harass and repress them.

Mentioning that over 12,000 people have so far been arrested in the name of combing operation, she said, ‘I’ve heard there’s no space to accommodate such huge number of arrested people in jails. Even, some of them are staying in bathrooms.’

Khaleda alleged that ruling party men are torturing the members of the Hindu community and grabbing their land property by forcing them to leave the country.

The BNP chief said the government is trying to re-establish one-party Baksal rule by repressing the country’s people and snatching their all rights.

She claimed that she has been on a movement to restore the rule of law, ensure justice and people’s all basics and democratic rights.

‘You’ll see soon how the country’s people drive Awami League out of power. People are waiting to see its bad consequences.’

Khaleda called on the country’s people to be united to get back their all rights. ‘Let’s take forward our programmes in a peaceful manner and create a path for holding a free and fair election under a non-party government.
