NBR investigating its chief, seeks account details from banks

20 November,2014

RTNN News Desk: In a rare move, the National Board of Revenue is investigating the bank accounts of its own chief.

NBR's Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) has asked banks to provide all financial details of Ghulam Hussain and his college teacher wife Zakia Mansoor Hussain by Nov 24.

The letter, a copy of which is available with bdnews24.com, has asked banks to send updated details from July 1, 2007.

CIC seeks account details of any person or institution to investigate whether they have evaded tax or VAT or have undisclosed income.

The letter said the matter was "very important" for national revenue's sake and asked banks to consider the matter as "confidential".

The banks will be fined Tk 25,000 at a time, the CIC said, for missing the deadline. For further delays, they will have to pay Tk 500 daily.

Hussain, who became the NBR chief in October 2012, said the move reflected the organisation's transparency.

When approached, he said the CIC was free to seek his financial details from the banks.

The former commerce secretary said there should not be any problem if his institution sought his financial details.

The 1982 BCS batch cadre started his career at the Customs and went on to work at the Bangladesh embassy in the US. He worked at the PMO from 1996-98.

"It is for transparency," he told bdnews24.com when it was pointed out that he was the first NBR chief whose account details were being looked into.

"We started by seeking my details, then we'll seek others' later."
