06 June,2016

RTNN News Desk: Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been ranked 36th among the world’s 100 most powerful women in 2016, according to the Forbes’ list.

With this, she has seen a significant elevation in her position in the list - from 59th in 2015.

Among the 26 most powerful female political leaders of the world in 2016, Sheikh Hasina, also president of ruling Awami League since 1981, has been placed at 15th.

“Sheikh Hasina Wajed has command over a country with the world`s eighth largest population -- 162 million people -- and she has wielded this power since 2009,” Forbes noted in her profile.

Hasina ranked 79th in 2009, the year she assumed office for the second time after winning parliamentary polls in December 2008.

German chancellor Angela Merkel has topped the list as she has been doing for a few years.

Hillary Rodham Clinton who is the front-runner in the US Democratic Party’s presidential nomination contest and country’s Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen have captured second and third positions in the list.

At the 26th position is Myanmar state counselor Aung San Suu Kyi from among the leaders in Bangladesh’s immediate neighbourhood

About premier Hasina, Forbes also referred to her critics’ contention that she could, and should, be exercising her influence to address the recent spate of hate crimes and attacks.

“Critics worry the failure to roundly condemn the murders only sets the stage for worse, further destabilising a government that already lost credibility in the 2014 elections, which left hundreds dead or injured,” Forbes added.
