5 killed, 12 rescued as Gulshan hostage crisis ends

02 July,2016

RTNN News Desk: Five people were killed and twelve rescued alive after security forces conducted an offensive at a restaurant in the diplomatic zone of Bangladesh capital, Dhaka, on Saturday morning bringing to an end to the 11-hour-long hostage crisis.

It only took 45 minutes to bring the hostage situation under control after Bangladesh commandos launched the offensive around 7.40am at the Holey Artisan Bakery, a Spanish restaurant popular with expats.

Police said five dead bodies were found inside the restaurant while twelve people were rescued alive. However, the identities of the deceased and rescued could not be known immediately.

The hostage crisis followed a Friday night gunbattle with police that left at least two senior officers dead and 40 people injured.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the terror attack, according to Amaq, an ISIS media branch.
