Tokyo wins race to host Olympics 2020

RTNN Sports: Thousands of Japanese who stayed up all night to witness the Olympic vote erupted in joy on news that Tokyo will host the 2020 Games, as athletes hailed the "dream" result and TV hosts broke down in tears.

Tokyo has won the race to host the 2020 Olympic Games after the Japanese prime minister flew in to personally reassure voters that radioactive leaks from the Fukushima power plant would not create a health risk.

The intervention from Shinzo Abe helped the Japanese capital defeat Madrid and Istanbul in the race to host the Games after a campaign in which each of the three faced major economic or political challenges. A princess who rarely leaves Japan and a promise to combine fiscal responsibility with a passionate welcome also helped Tokyo win after two previous consecutive bid failures.

People taking part in official events and crowded into bars and restaurants throughout the city erupted into cheers, tears and "banzai" victory shouts after Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee, revealed that Tokyo had fought off competition from Istanbul and Madrid to host the 2020 Games.

The Japanese delegation attending the general session of the International Olympic Committee in Buenos Aires embraced at the announcement that Tokyo had won 60 votes to Istanbul's 36 in the second round of voting. Madrid had been eliminated in the first round.

"Tokyo is honoured and humbled by the IOC's decision to award us the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games," Tsunekazu Takeda, the president of the Japanese Olympic Committee and the Tokyo 2020 campaign, said in a statement.

"The Olympic Family has put its faith in our great city to deliver the memorable Games that we have promised, and we will not let them down," he said.

"The most recent public polls revealed that 92 per cent of the Japanese population supported Tokyo's hosting of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, so I am confident that 116 million Japanese people are smiling right now," Takeda added.
